Insomnia has been a hard battle with this pregnancy.
My second pregnancy has brought decently intense round ligament discomfort and just ligament discomfort in general. This was making sleep very difficult. I was waking up and having trouble walking, and then not able to get comfortable again.
Enter some solutions.
1. The Snoogle
I’m convinced this magical device was created by angels. I didn’t have one of these with my first pregnancy. I was convinced I could make do and create the same experience with a cheaper body pillow and some other various stuffed items. Boy was I wrong!
The first night with this pillow, I slept all night for the first time in a week. I woke up feeling like I was going to pee all over myself, but I just didn’t care. I had finally slept. It was wonderful.
Once this baby stops nursing constantly, I will continue using my Snoogle. This is my forever best friend. I feel sad that I didn’t have one the first time around. I feel sad that I didn’t have one my entire life.
Years ago, I saw the movie The Back-Up Plan. I remember Jennifer Lopez’s character Zoe is pregnant and has a boyfriend. He threw her pillow into the dumpster because he felt like it was coming between them. Then later, she climbs into the dumpster to get the pillow back out again.
That scene came rushing back into my mind after my first night with this pillow. Yep – it’s that good.
2. Lavender Essential Oil mixed with coconut oil.
You can’t use just any essential oil. It’s very important to use pure therapeutic grade essential oils in order to have the same experience. This is why I use Essential Oils made by Young Living. Many times the essential oils you buy are composed of mostly another oil (olive oil for example), not purely the essential oil.
The one I used is Young Living Lavender Essential Oil
You mix a spoonful of coconut oil with 2 drops of the lavender essential oil. Then have your partner rub the mixture on your whole spine.
The first time I did this was rather comical. My husband rubbed it on my spine, and I laid there waiting… not knowing what was going to happen. I thought, “Well, I mean, that was nice, but I don’t feel anything. Oh well. I guess these don’t work for me.” The next thing I knew it was morning, and I had slept soundly all night. That’s when I got it. “Oh… they really work!”
When you combine the pillow with the lavender oil, you get a lovely night of sleep. The other nice benefit I’ve noticed is that when I do wake up to pee, my mind doesn’t race anymore if I’ve done the oil. If I don’t do the oil, I have a lot of trouble falling back to sleep. My mind wanders all over the place, thinking of every stupid thing it can come up with. But with the oil, I get up to pee, and then I lay back down and my mind is peaceful. It’s a new experience for me. One night I *tried* to think about what I was doing the next day to make “the list”. I couldn’t even do it. I was completely peaceful, and I went right back to sleep.
It was wonderful. Wonderful.
These two things have completely changed my pregnancy experience. Resting well makes the biggest difference. I am so happy I have both of these tools this time.
And honestly, these are things that I will continue after pregnancy. It makes me happy just thinking about how different my sleep will be moving forward. I will no longer be plagued by this insomnia, and I’m very grateful.
