I live in mosquito valley.
I know people joke that the mosquito is their county bird, but it really could be here. We’re all marshland and right on the water. I killed a mosquito that was literally the size of a quarter. Seriously, I couldn’t believe it. I have seen many that size, but haven’t seen any bigger. It feels like they have invaded and are taking over.
To make matters worse, they LOVE me. I’m not sure why, but they flock to me instantly. I’m like a reverse citronella candle for everyone else. They all come to me, attack me, and leave everyone else alone. It’s great if you aren’t me, but I hate it!
Also, citronella candles don’t help me at all. I’ve sat hovered around three, and I still get covered in bites.
Bug spray works pretty well, but I worry about the safety of it, especially now that I’m pregnant. And the safety for my daughter.
So when I found this little recipe, I was hopeful, but skeptical.
I mixed it up with hope it would actually work, but was fully prepared to be disappointed.
My family and I went to a neighbor’s house right on the water – prime mosquito land. I sprayed myself generously along with my toddler, and we ventured outside.
It was right at dusk, so this was a really big test. I realized that I wasn’t getting bitten at all. Neither was anyone sitting near me. I looked around, and could see what looked like a wall of mosquitoes hovering about 2 feet above my head. It was a thick cloud, and they weren’t coming any closer.
I’ve never had this level of success with any mosquito prevention, and wasn’t worried about the safety of what I was using. Plus, it smells delicious.
I don’t go anywhere without my little homemade mixture now. I can’t recommend this any higher or with more enthusiasm. It REALLY works.
