Father’s Day is right around the corner! Check out our list of unique gift ideas for the father who craves adventure.
My husband is a thrill-seeking, death defying adrenaline junkie.
So when he first found out that he was going to be a dad, he freaked out…just a little. His reaction was understandable, seeing that we live in a society where many people coin having kids as the “end of your so-called life.” 🙂 Sure, things change, but definitely not for the worse. Becoming a parent is like living in one room of a HUGE house, when all of a sudden you get the keys to floors and floors of new rooms. Your life becomes full of discovery after discovery, and every room you enter enriches you more and more. For adventure seekers like my husband, he’s not satisfied with meandering from room to room. He wants to go straight to the roof! It can be done, but it takes some patience, time and prep, especially when you have a tyke or two in tow.
When it comes to buying gifts for these (awesome) types of dads, it can be challenging to find the right thing that will enrich his “new dad” adventure. Below are some ideas that are guaranteed to win you some points.
My husband is an EMS Helicopter Pilot. In his previous job, he flew helicopter tours in the Grand Canyon. My first time visiting him at work, I noticed that all of his fellow pilots were carrying around the same brand of water bottle: The Hydro Flask. What could be so special about this bottle? I thought to myself. Upon asking my husband, he informed me that this bottle literally keeps their water ice-cold all day. In a place like the Grand Canyon where it often reaches 120 degrees in the summer, having this type of cool commodity is important. So of course, I had to see for myself. I went out and bought my own personal, bright orange Hydro Flask and to this day, carry it with me wherever I go. It really is that awesome! For an adventurous dad who wants to give mom a break by getting the BUB outdoors, this bottle is a perfect gift.
This is a MUST HAVE accessory to the Hydro Flask, which typically comes with a screw on top. This straw makes drinking water on the go easier for dad. And when your BUB gets a little older, he will want to drink out of this straw as well!
During the first year of a new baby’s life, they are primarily focused on the mama. Babies are very instinctual, and they know that mom is their lifeline. But don’t let this discourage you dads! Just wait until they reach 18 months – 2 years. They will become obsessed with you.
During the first year with my son, my husband often times felt like he was useless when it came to taking care of him, which is a very normal feeling for new dads to experience. One of the many helpful things he did was take our son for long walks so that I could get a break. The two of them would walk all over our neighborhood. They’d stop at the local bakery to share a bagel and cream cheese before heading to the park where they would watch the geese. My husband became a pro at taking our baby everywhere with him, thanks to our ERGObaby 360. This baby carrier ROCKS! It has four different positions, so if your back is getting sore, you can flip it around to your front or side. My husband got many hours out of this carrier, and many good memories of bonding with his son.
So, these headphones just might be one of your biggest lifesavers during the first couple of years with your baby. I was always told that babies love riding in the car. Whoever came up with this idea was gravely mistaken! More often than not, babies will cry and scream while riding in the car, often times for your entire trip. It’s a terrible spot to be in, especially when they are turned towards the back and you are not in a place on the road where you can stop. I was able to to cope and stay calm while my son screamed his little heart out. My husband, however, really struggled to focus through it. To him it was like nails on a chalkboard..times 10! And since he was the one driving most of the time, it became an issue of safety. We struggled through this phase, and it wasn’t until after we got through it that someone told us about their solution. They used Bose QuietComfort headphones, which are not your average headphone. They are wireless and offer significant noise reduction for travel, work and everything in between. You can also control your music and calls on Apple devices with inline mic/remote, which is pretty cool (and useful while driving). If your guy is a light sleeper, or has a job that requires him to be well-rested, these bad boys will help him sleep like a baby, until it’s his turn to feed the baby, of course. 🙂
Now…there are strollers and then there are STROLLERS! When I look at my husband, I just can’t picture him pushing our baby around in a small, light-weight stroller with tiny wheels ( not that there’s anything wrong with these types of strollers. They are essential for navigating through crowded areas). My husband is the rugged, big tires, off-road kind of guy, which is why we were so tickled when my father gifted us with the Thule Urban Glide Stroller at our baby shower. This stroller is perfect for me because I’m a runner. It’s perfect for my husband because it’s strong, durable, made by a great company (Thule is relatively new to the world of strollers. They are a a Swedish company known for making high quality roof-racks for cars.) and has a unique yet highly functional design. In the world of strollers, the Thule Urban Glide is definitely the off-road version. With these rugged tires, your guy will be able to take your BUB across any terrain. The Thule also has a great storage compartment that has plenty of room for snacks, diapers, toys and anything else he will need for a day of adventure adventure!
Until your BUB is big enough to face forward, you’ll need this carseat adapter for your Thule stroller. The cool thing about this adapter is that it’s compatible with all popular carseats.
When it comes to adventure accessories, this Light My Fire Meal Kit takes the cake! On those days when your guy gifts you with a “long break” day (meaning he takes your BUB on an extended adventure) this sustainable food packing kit will ensure your loves will have all the nourishment they need for a day of fun. This 8-piece designer mess kit is perfect for stowing and serving food on the go. all of the pieces store compactly inside the bowl and lid. The contents include: 1 lid/plate, 1 plate/bowl, 1 SnapBox original, 1 SnapBox oval, 1 Pack-up-Cup, 1 strainer/cutting board, 1 Spork original, and 1 Harness. As an added bonus, everything is BPA-free. Also, the polypropylene will not soften at higher temperatures and all of the pieces are dishwasher and microwave safe. This meal kit gives your guy the opportunity to be creative with your BUB’s food and feel good about being sustainable.
My husband came home with this book a couple of weeks ago. Since then, I’ve walked in on him reading it, and laughing simultaneously, several times. According to him, the author of this book does a great job of taking challenging situations all new parents face and creating humorous, yet informative lists on how to cope and sail through them with flying colors. Some examples of these lists are: “You Deserve a Break” which offers ideas for downtime, such as “giving blood” and “untangling cords”, or “The Wrong Kind of Games” which lists things like “Brush the Cat’s Teeth” and “Bee Beards!” This book will inspire your guy, make him laugh and validate his feelings that he’s a normal dad!
7. Tower Paddle Board
Tower boards are the big deal right now! Your guy will love it for several reasons. It will get him out of the house on to the water. And it’s a sport he’ll want you and the kids to get in on! I see many a family adventure in your near future. 🙂
So…we are treading in “untraditional waters” here, which is what makes this product so AWESOME! Because we’re both physically active people, my husband and I made the decision that having a baby was not going to keep us from having adventures. Our BUB was going to be incorporated into our activities. If we go on a hike, so does he, if we fly somewhere for vacation, he comes too! Our philosophy in raising our son does require more time and planning as well as some unique baby gear. One such piece of “baby gear” fell into our laps unexpectedly, and to this day has been the one thing we have used the most. Ladies and gentlemen, meet the GORUCK Rucksacks: our #1 choice for carrying our baby essentials! That’s right traditional diaper bag, step aside, because “Mr. Manly Diaper Bag” just walked in!
GORUCK was founded by Jason McCarthy, who served our country as a Green Beret after the events of 9/11. Inspired by the lessons he learned in the Green Beret community, both in training and in war, he launched himself into creating a product and an experience that would serve as a voice for good, employ more Veterans of Special Operations than any organization outside the US military, and build a bridge between the military and civilian worlds. He started out producing the GR1, which led to more sizes and styles of Rucksacks. It’s an awesome product backed by an incredible mission and cause.
My husband takes his GORUCK everywhere with him. some of his favorite features include:
- It’s water resistant
- It’s bomb-proof (that includes those unexpected poop bombs.) 🙂
- Big, deep pocket on the front. Perfect for wallets, keys and cell phones
- We LOVE how the main compartment opens flat and that there is an internal mesh pocket that allows for optimal organization. Also a separate compartment for a laptop.
- Lots of room for diapers, toys, clothes and other baby necessities.
- A lifetime guarantee!
Your guy will use his GORUCK for many things in his lifetime, including packing for adventures with your BUB!

10. GoPro HERO4 BLACK
As I mentioned before, my husband is a helicopter pilot. He’s also a skydive junkie, avid diver and all around lover of anything fast-paced and semi dangerous. He’s what you’d call an “Adrenaline Junkie.” Although I tend to drift towards the dangerous side every now and then, I’m not as eager to take on as many death defying activities as he is. I do enjoy living vicariously through his GoPro videos, however. As a Film School graduate, I have to say that GoPro never ceases to amaze me with their products. Their camera’s are resilient, small, portable, light-weight, water resistant, a fully capable of recording quality High Definition video and sound. For the dad who wants to take his kids down rivers and up mountains and across oceans, this camera will capture his memories in action, and will serve as the perfect accessory to every adventure with dad.
